Custom fits are for more than just suits and orthopedics. They are essential for getting your structural steel in the ground with minimal delays.

As Edmonton’s fabrication experts, we design and fabricate long-lasting projects that meet our clients' diverse aesthetic and performance needs. Today, we’re highlighting how we use in-house fabrication services to aid in project delivery in both grain handling and custom scopes.

Structural Steel Fabrication Refresher

Image 2 (Structural Steel Fabrication Refresher)

We’ve gone over the basics of structural steel fabrication in a previous blog. As a short recap, structural steel fabrication can be deployed in two areas:

Shop Fabrication Field Fabrication
Shop fabrication involves cutting, bending, and assembling steel components in a controlled shop or factory environment. These components are then transported and quickly assembled at the construction site.

Pros:
High degrees of quality control.
Fast turnaround time.

Cost-effective at scale.

Cons:

Not always suitable for highly complex builds.

Requires intensive planning and preparation.

Field fabrication involves cutting, bending, and assembling steel components directly on-site. This method offers flexibility and adaptability, making it suitable for structures that cannot be prefabricated in a shop or for builds in challenging or remote locales.

Pros:
Flexibility in the final project.

Suitable for environments where pre-fabrications cannot be delivered.

Cons:
Increased time & labour costs

More work to implement and monitor QC.

In commercial and industrial builds, we utilize pre-fabrication in shop environments for low-cost and quick project delivery. Our custom fabrications are very useful in grain handling systems and structural steel projects, which we will touch on next.

Use Cases of Custom Steel Fabrication

Custom steel fabrication plays an important role when it comes to the longevity and utility of building components. Below are a few areas where steel fabrication should be your first choice of technique:

  • Pressure Piping: Quality pressure piping fabrication is another typical requirement for industrial projects. As an ABSA-certified team, we’re equipped to handle fabrication needs for clients ranging from power stations to petroleum refineries.
  • Access Systems: Steel ladders, stairs, doorways, and railings can all be fabricated. Because grain handling systems have extensive safety considerations, it helps to have expert eyes on both the development and installation of the finished product.
  • Platework: Structural metal and platework involve fabricating, assembling, fitting, and installing steel or other metal components for buildings, bridges, tanks, towers, boilers, pressure vessels, and other similar products.

As with most design builds, it is important to start with the big picture and work through what will be built from steel on-site and what will be pre-fabricated. Customized fabrications during the buildout can range from any of the utilities we described above to architectural features that will bring a unique flavour to your project.

In short, our steel fabrication services mean enduring custom elements that fit within your new or existing structure. With the majority of structural steel considerations handled at the outset of the project, we are able to use our skills and machinery to make the best use of your space. Case Study: Redwater School Access

For parents, the approaching school years mean getting their children fit for school. For us, it means getting schools fit for kids!

Redwater School needed a wheelchair ramp to meet accessibility goals. With permitting in place just three weeks before the school opened, we pitched, designed, fabricated, and installed a 38-foot access ramp that passed all inspections. Read the full case study.

The takeaway? A team with the eyes for fabrication needs and the tools to complete them makes for effective partners when it comes to challenging deadlines.
